Good afternoon, Fox Mill Families,

We hope you are getting ready to attend the epic 6th grade talent show, which starts at 7pm tonight in our school’s cafeteria. Our 3rd – 5th graders got a sneak peak of the performance and thoroughly loved it.  Please come out in numbers to support our ‘seniors’ tonight 😊

A FEW UPDATES

Read Across America News

We had a great week celebrating Read Across America Week. Please see the highlights.

  • Monday, we had author Roland Smith present virtually to the sixth graders.
  • Wednesday, we had Gary Lloyd a local storyteller present in person to the kindergarten through second grade students.
  • Wednesday, we also had author Steven Smith present virtually to the third through fifth grade students.
  • Throughout the week we had several parents and community members read to various classes.
  • Our 4th grade Japanese immersion students did an amazing job as guest readers for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade, as well as their 4th grade peers, during Read Across America Week! It took great courage to step into another classroom and read aloud in front of everyone in their second language, and they rose to the challenge with confidence and enthusiasm. Their dedication and effort truly showcased their growth as language learners and role models for younger students.
  • Each class made a simple reading goal for the week.  At the end of the week, every student received a special prize for reaching their goal.  Thank you to Mr. Moose for purchasing the prizes.
  • Friday was drop everything and read and pajama day.  Every class spent a short amount of time dropping everything to read!

SPRING PICTURE DAY

Individual and class pictures will be taken on March 12th.  Families will receive separate order envelopes for individual and class pictures.  You may order pictures using the envelopes or order from Strawbridge Studios online.

If your student is in 6th grade you will also receive a separate order form for a panoramic picture of all 6th grade students.

Please note—the individual pictures in the spring differ from those taken in the fall. Orders must be placed before picture day. Only students who have purchased a Spring package prior to picture day will be photographed. Spring pictures will be full body shots set in front of a background. A sample of the picture is available on the Fox Mill ES website at  https://foxmilles.fcps.edu/

LOST AND FOUND

We would like to thank Mr. Dan Greene, Allie Greene’s husband, for constructing a new lost and found wardrobe.  Please come and take a peek to see the wonderful craftmanship and if your child has lost anything.

Supporting Academic Growth and Reading on Level by Third Grade The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan

Across FCPS, teachers, staff, parents, and even older students are invested in helping our youngest learners grow their love of reading from a strong foundation.

The goal is for students to move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by the end of the third grade. Reading on grade level is connected to other Strategic Plan goals, including completing advanced coursework and graduating on time.

Last fall, FCPS introduced a new reading curriculum that aligns with evidence-based literacy instruction. Between fall and winter, reading screener results show more than a 4% increase in the number of students in kindergarten to third grade approaching or meeting expectations. Similarly, 3.4% more third graders demonstrate strong foundations of reading and 8.4% more third graders are mastering grade-level standards.

Discover how an elementary school employs a science-based approach, including phonics, to supercharge students' reading.

Learn more about the FCPS FY 2026 Advertised Budget. View the Budget Development Calendar to stay up to date.

Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.

E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28, 2025

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home. Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them. Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 24, 2025, for February 28 and the week of March 3, 2025
  • March 3, 2025, for the week of March 10, 2025
  • March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

Use the FNS website link  to fill out the student fasting meal kit forms if they have students who are fasting from February 28 to March 28, 2025.

Happy Friday Fox Mill Families,

We hope you had a lovely week. Our sixth graders journeyed to Rachel Carlson Middle School to visit and get acquainted with the layout of what will be their new routine or the next school year.

We dropped by a few classes as they celebrated Valentine’s Day. Mrs. Na and Endo Sensei’s class had fun decorating cookies, playing bingo, and creatively constructing snow globes to depict kindness.

We enjoyed seeing the beautifully designed boxes in Kindergarten and First Grade, ready to be stuffed with Valentine treats from each classmate.

Good Afternoon Fox Mill Families,

We dropped in on several classes this week to watch our students at work. Mrs. Greene’s fourth grade class did an amazing job sounding out words and eloquently explaining the power of the “magic e”.  Sixth grade was treated to Japanese treats as part of Lunar New Year.

A Few Updates:

February 3-7 is National School Counseling Week!

School counselors help students thrive and examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; they work in partnership with families as they encounter challenges of raising children in today’s world; focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an education system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program. As the number of students with mental health concerns increases, our counselors and clinical team are working in close collaboration with teachers and families to help kids return to wellness and academic engagement.

Bathroom Vandalism

This afternoon, we addressed the constant vandalism of the boys’ bathroom with our 4- 6 graders.

The misuse we have seen is the following, but not limited to:

**Excessive amounts of toilet paper being put in the toilets and the sinks which causes plumbing issues.

**Vandalism- Intentionally damaging toilet paper dispensers and other bathroom fixtures.

**Using toilet paper and paper towels for purposes other than its intended use.

This is putting a strain on our already limited custodial staff support - the backbone of a clean and healthy school environment.

Please reinforce the importance of using the bathrooms appropriately with your students.

Virtual Community Boundary Review Meetings

If you have not been able to attend a Community Boundary Review meeting yet, it’s not too late! The following virtual meetings will have the same format and information available as the previous in-person meetings:

We hope you had a wonderful week. We welcomed the uninterrupted full week of learning and growing. We’re excited to see how refreshed and ready our students are to dive back into learning.

A FEW UPDATES

Thank You Note from Mrs. Welles- Japanese Art Week

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Japanese Cultural Committee and our many wonderful volunteers who made this year’s Japanese Art Week, The Art of Yayoi Kusama, such a success. Your time, effort, and dedication made this annual event possible, and your support truly brought out the creativity and excitement in all our students.

Whether you helped plan the event, organized the materials, presented the project to the classes, or simply offered encouragement, your contributions had a lasting impact on our school community.  I am deeply grateful for your partnership in making this event a memorable experience for our young artists.

Thank you again for your invaluable support!!!

ATTENDANCE TIPS

During the school year:

  • Maintain regular bed time and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.
  • Talk to your child about why going to school every day is important unless they are sick.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick.
  • If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him feel comfortable and excited about learning. Keep in mind complaints of a stomachache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
  • Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation, or health problems.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education. Please remember to label your child’s clothing.

Happy Friday Fox Mill Families,

We hope you had a wonderful week. It was quite a busy week at Fox Mill. We would like to thank all of our staff and the PTA for another successful Books and Bingo night. A special thank you to our librarian, Sarah Slusher, for working tirelessly to ensure a smooth week at our Book Fair.

We would also like to thank our teachers in the music department for two outstanding performances. Our chorus concert on Tuesday as well as our Band and Strings Concert on Thursday. A special thank you to one of our parents, Jeremy Boyle, for accompanying our students on guitar during both performances.

At Fox Mill, we provide students with opportunities to showcase their talent. At our Drama club assembly on Tuesday morning, we witnessed a star performance of the beloved play – Annie. We would love for you to attend our Winter Show on Tuesday, December 17th at 7pm.

A FEW UPDATES

Road Safety

As we move into the busy festive season, we would like to appeal to our families to be extra careful when using the streets. Please emphasize with your children, the importance of always using crosswalks, looking both ways before crossing, never running into traffic and being aware of their surroundings.  As reminder students are not allowed to walk across the bus loop during the school day. We are also asking families who gather in the walker’s area during dismissal, to be extra vigilant of students in that area. This is not a location for students to be playing with a ball nor other objects that could potentially run into the street or the kiss and ride loop.

Family Life Education

All FLE lessons for K-6 will be taught during the week of December 16-20th. Please check your digital consent form to ensure that your child (children) can/ cannot participate in lessons.

Reminder:  Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024.

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Pamela James at [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Pamela James at [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Happy Friday Fox Mill Families,

Please remember to show up in your numbers for our Books and Bingo event tonight. We look forward to a spectacular evening. We would like to thank the PTA as well as Mrs. Slusher and her team for organizing this event.

We would also like to thank all our parents who donated to the Food Drive as well as the Pajama Drive. With your help, you provided warmth and comfort to those in need, particularly the youngest among us.

A FEW UPDATES

Bathroom Vandalism

We pride ourselves on being responsible citizens at school. We boast a clean, welcoming environment for all our students to learn and grow. Unfortunately, we have seen the misuse of paper towels and toilet paper in some of the hallway bathrooms. Our custodians work extremely hard to clean, but we are asking that parents reiterate with students, the importance of using all toiletries appropriately in the bathrooms.

THREE HOUR EARLY RELEASE MONDAY – December 9th. If you have not already done so, please inform your child’s teacher of your decision on dismissal on Monday.

Fox Mill will be a buzz of activities over the next few weeks. Chorus Winter Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at 6pm. Our Band concert will be on Thursday, December 12th at 6pm. We will be entertained by our students in the drama club as they bring to us Annie Jr. The performance starts at 7pm on Tuesday, December 17th. This is a free admission event; however, we will accept donations toward props and rights to future performances.

November 22, 2024

Happy Friday Fox Mill Families,

Before publication today, we saw what seemed to be a few flakes of snow for the 2024-2025 school year, much to the delight of students. We were thrilled to have a full week of uninterrupted learning with our amazing students. Their display of amazing work this week, can be seen along our corridors, reflecting the hard work of our teachers and students.

Our Friendsgiving lunch certainly put the smiles on our students’ faces as they ran and greeted each parent at their scheduled lunch block. Thank you for being present and making this, another successful event at Fox Mill ES.

We would like to thank the PTA for securing volunteers. Because of you, the day went by smoothly, from setting up to cleaning up.  Thank you to Sarah Kingdon for her hard work in making sure Fox Mill Friendsgiving is always a favorite event.  If you would like opportunities to help at an event at our school, please reach out to the PTA. We welcome your “hands” as well as your ideas.

A FEW UPDATES

FEDERAL IMPACT AID SURVEY:

You still have time to submit your survey!

Please help FCPS get the funding we are eligible for by completing the Impact Aid survey today.

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:

  • Military families.
  • Federally connected families.
  • Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.

For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

Step 1: CLICK HERE to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.

Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page, and see a green check next to each of their names.

LOST AND FOUND

Please check the Lost and Found before Thanksgiving Break.  In the season of giving and being thankful, we will be donating all unclaimed clothing to children in need if they are not picked up by the end of November.

ATTENDANCE

Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.

Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.

Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.

Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with schoolwork, dealing with peer conflicts, or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.

At Fox Mill ES, we create a warm and welcoming environment and would love to see all our students every day. Please reach to us if there are ways that we could support your child if he/she is chronically absent.

BOOK FAIR

THE Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Fox Mill. Please visit the link below for all the information you’ll need to make this a memorable educational experience for your child.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.
